The bariolage part isn’t only exciting because of the chromaticism — all those repeated A’s are intense too, in a way that doesn’t come across fully in MIDI form or played on a piano. On violin, you’re not just hammering the same note over and over. You’re really playing two different notes that are both very close to being A — you alternate between the open A string and the D fingered at the equivalent of the seventh fret in the guitar. These two A’s are a little out of alignment with each other.
As for taking oneself too seriously… If I wasn’t able to make fun of myself, especially considering what I’m trying to do with my life, I don’t think I’d be able to cope. That’s not to say I don’t take anything seriously, because that’s essential too. But at the end of the day, being able to throw your hands up and laugh when a project goes horribly awry, or bringing an attitude of openness and humor onstage, can make space for very magical things to happen out of the blue, and that’s what I love most of all.
Improvising on an instrument isn’t hard once you have a level of technical fluency. You can play whatever notes you want in whatever order you want to play them, with whatever tone and attack. Scratching is more limited. The music in the recording is set already, it’s in the order that it’s in, and it sounds how it sounds. Any expressive moves you make have to make sense in relation to what’s happening in the recording.

Harmonically, the “majorness” of the V chord is pretty weak, as you can barely hear the major third. And yet the harshness of the iiº chord in the intro is masked by the sweet flute-like tone. Lots of anomalies. Another anomaly is just how fast this song rose in the charts, and how even faster it then dropped, going from #5 to #60 to #91, and then who knows where.

And I don’t know if it’s just really strong overtones, but I could swear that whatever the sample is that plays on beat one of each loop has at least an overtone of C# in there somewhere, but I don’t know if it’s strong enough to call it “major.” It just gives it a really different color than your typical Aeolian mumble-rap tune.

I am, however, here to tell you that getting a grip on anxieties and insecurities around your vocal performance is perfectly possible.

This more complex view of phase interaction is more applicable to the real-world scenarios we encounter as musicians and producers. You might be struggling to record a drum kit with multiple mics and losing that precious oomph in the process. Your studio monitors could start sounding a bit odd, because each side is interfering destructively with the other while their sound travels through the air. You may find that a certain parallel processing hack or sample replacement makes your sound thinner rather than awesome-er.
We all know that the true soul of a record comes alive in that final crazy idea you throw in at the very end of your session — so plan for it a little bit. Go outside with a microphone and capture field recordings or create an interlude jam session. Your engineer will probably freak out if you spring this on them last minute — so be sure to add it to your agenda in advance.
“Dancing in the Street” is not a Bowie/Jagger original. It’s actually a cover of a song that was originally performed by Martha and the Vandellas and was written by Marvin Gaye. This version, however, is without a doubt the most famous modern rendition and representation of the old song. (Fun fact: It was also covered by Van Halen shortly before Bowie and Jagger did it.)
